Eleanor Roosevelt, 1948 Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighbourhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. 42% agree with positive statements about human rights and disagree with negative statements. 30% agree with both positive and negative statements about human rights. 13% agree with negative statements and disagree with positive. 14% didn't previously hold firm views on statements about human rights.

Human rights remind us we are working with people and their lives - not just a condition, not a policy, not a statistic, not just a problem to be solved. They matter because they protect us from the worst that we can do to one another - and highlight the joy and positive impact we can have. Human rights illuminate and respect and humanity we can show each other.
